13 & God - Men of Station

I’ve probably spent more time in Germany than in any other country outside of the U.S. I was there when the Germans pioneered a worldwide explosion in boy bands, when they made The Kelly Family superstars, and when they fostered the spirit of an androgynous teenager who will probably take over America later this year. 13 & God — a side project comprised of members of Munich’s Notwist and Oakland’s Themselves — is nestled firmly in Germany’s underground, where pop, techno, and hip-hop coexist blissfully under the radar of Bravo Magazine and Viva! TV.

Muxtape Recommendations & Search

Update: This path to music discovery is currently a dead end. The PIpe isn’t working suddenly. I’ll see if I can fix it. In the meantime, check out Muxseek.

I made some enhancements to my Muxtape Recommendations tool (for Last.fm users). It’s still a little slow, but it’s more reliable now and you might notice that the results are better. It’s powered in part by a Muxtape search tool called Muxseek that a commenter told me about. It’s much more comprehensive than Google or any other Muxtape search options I’ve seen. Even if you don’t have a Last.fm account, you can still use my Muxseek Search page to search by artist or track and subscribe to the results as a feed or on iGoogle / My Yahoo!.

Joni Mitchell - One Week Last Summer

I discovered this song when I was taking a Delta flight from Gainesville, FL to San Francisco, CA. Our plane had one of those touch screen tv/movie/music systems on the back of each chair. They had over 200 albums to pick from but instead of using it to listen to my favorite Radiohead album or something else already familiar, I used this as an opportunity to explore new music. While exploring the Jazz albums, I fell in love with this song and listened to it on repeat while I gazed over the midnight view of the midwestern US.
